Psychopathic Tendencies - Jerry Sandusky & Lance Armstrong by Louis Evan Palmer

When one's sees or hears or reads about Jerry Sandusky & Lance Armstrong, one can't help being  struck by their stolid unblinking claims of innocence in the face of numerous bonafide accusations & evidence about events and actions that took place over a long period of time. The 26+ statements  from different members of the racing program of which Lance Armstrong was a part are brushed aside as disinformation and distortions. Some 10 victims came forward with evidence of abuse at the hands of Sandusky, yet, according to him, they're all lying and mistaken. Lance Armstrong won't testify or defend himself because it's gone all too long and he wants to move on. Jerry Sandusky claims the same, liars out to get him.

It does sound familiar as more of these psychopathic types are brought to justice. The abuse of power, the oblivious lying, the lack of guilt or remorse, lack of empathy; it goes on. We desperately need a simple way to detect psychopaths as they are a true menace to society.

Tweedledee & Tweedledum-mer - Canada & Britain Sharing Embassies by Louis Evan Palmer

Canada apparently spent all that time and effort becoming independent of Great Britain for naught because in a twinkling, our Minister for External Affairs, the Loud, Bumbling John Baird has swept it away. Canada will now "share" embassies with Britain. No country or people will think less of Canada because of it, he tells us. It is not a  return to colonialism. Canada will continue to have its own policies and not necessarily be aligned  with Britain. But really, when those questions get asked, you're already there, you're already compromised. It doesn't matter how the embassy entrances look, is it to the left for Canada? It doesn't matter what the relative square footage will be for each "partner". It's a common law marriage in all but name. The perception regarding Canada's stature is devastating. It diminishes Canada in every way and on the world stage no less. Could Baird have picked a more damaging thing  to do short of traipsing into another war with Mother Britain or Big Brother America? Hardly. The Conservatives rabid right is emerging  into the broad daylight looking for enemies both foreign and domestic, firmly in the thrall of its historic me-first allies and their current political tendencies.

Extravagant Redundant Olympics by Louis Evan Palmer

When the modern Olympics were reconstituted in 1896, there were few, if any, international sporting events. Bringing athletes together every four years from a number of countries was a good exercise in peaceful relations and served to inspire people and athletes alike.

Nowadays, it seems superfluous. There are international & national federations for every Olympic event who hold large world-class competitions annually so that in any given year, an athlete in any given sport can compete several times a year at the very top levels.
Given that, we can safely say that the Olympics are superfluous from the perspective of affording world-class competition. In fact, the Olympics are un-necessary and extravagant when fans and supporters can easily go to world-class competitions of the sports they follow.

Why continue with these immensely costly exercises in civic and national pride when they add nothing to the opportunities available to top-notch athletes that can't be gained by enhancing their national and international sporting bodies at far less cost and effort?

Is it only for publicity's sake that we're assuming huge debts and creating huge security exposures? Is it the Olympics rituals and ceremonies that make us willing to go such great lengths to host these games? Is to feed national pride and build international stature? It's likely all three reasons and more; is it worth it?

Some of the sports have their own highly successful leagues and championships to which competing in the Olympics can only add confusion and risk. Soccer (or football) leaps to mind. Do we need more?

There may come a time when no city will bid to host the Olympics. It will be seen to be what it has become - extravagant and redundant.

Motion-Picture Identity by Louis Evan Palmer

Continuity out of Points, Motion out of Snapshots

Nagarjuna famously said that everything is derived from mutual dependence. In trying to understand this statement, we can look at the "outputs" that define a person to us yet are, when we look at them, mere wisps. Words that issue from someone either spoken or written - which constitute the person to us, at the time, and we can record their words to give them more seeming weight and reality; but, in the end, they are disassociated fragments. The person, the entity, continues separately from the words that issue forth. The words may, or may not, mean anything to us; even if we understand them, they may be of little import to us. In all cases, they are not the "person" - they come from the person, they represent the person or their state of mind and feeling at the time, yet they have become "separate".

What we look at shares this disconnectedness. Our mind threads the stills we see into a moving reality. It eliminates the hole where our optic nerve disrupts the visual field. It reflects its training - training that we spent years learning when we were infants and young children and we could devote undivided attention to these things. Now, we don't know what we learned then and what determines what we see as our we see our expectations as much as what actually registers on our field of vision.

If we move towards our awareness itself and our sense of identity, we might find that it too is stitched together from singularities. We might find that like a motion picture, we create a fabric out of separate instances and that our memory and identity fade when the light of our awareness isn't shining on them. Is it that then that is the foundation? The abiding awareness that we notice from time to time but which weaves the world we know around us. Is it that awareness that strings together the innumerable vignettes that roll around us and in us? And, is there a larger world or beingness in which our consciousness swims?

Zeno of Elea delved into this arena with his pardoxes of plurality, motion and change See "Zeno's Paradoxes" edited by Wesley C. Salmon.

Can it be that when we scratch the surface, even a little, we strike a mystery? No matter where we look or when.

The Silencers by Louis Evan Palmer

They can be viewed as the great silencers: open and hidden self-censoring mechanisms that we exercise against topics that threaten to disturb the peace and good order of our lives. They are broad categorizations that can place the potential speaker or actor under fire while at the same time, diminishing their ability to protect themselves or argue against ideas or claims that they disagree with. The swath of the sliencers varies but each one steps its way into our discourse and effectively places their respective areas out of our scope.

For example, "anti-semite" is used to place any discourse by non-Jews about jewish subjects or facts, other than carefully defined supportive statements, beyond the pale; "homophobic" performs the same function for comments or observations by non-homosexual persons about homosexuals. The off-limits topics keeps expanding: "racist" curbs anything other than bromides from being spoken. Even critics from within the group itself can be circumscribed by adding "self-hating" or some other similar adjective of denigration. "Anti" is a tried and true torpedo to the truth as in anti-American or anti-capitalist. As often as not, "peer-reviewed" becomes a bulwark of the conventional along with a tyranny of credentials which if taken to extremes would result in only a few people being able to "expertly" talk about various carefully circumscribed topics.

These weapons of discourse destruction are rife in all spheres of communication. Eyes and ears are constantly on the lookout for any of the proscribed elements, ready to pounce with their denunciations, safe in the sanction of society; a society full now of its very own army of self-appointed censors, of which the most important censorship is self-censorship which passes uncritically for cultivation. And the price of dissent or even disagreement is being raised until even death is an option and not just in the so-called authoritarian regimes.

The result will be an enduring silence punctuated by a low-level hum of society-approved opinions and self-correcting thoughts. True discourse will only occur in the sciences but even there orthodoxy and corporate objectives are dominating.

The Truth Is Not In a Book by Louis Evan Palmer

How can the truth be in a book?  It would mean that the truth is in an abstraction and not in reality. It would mean the truth was tied to a language and not freely available. It would mean that the truth is tied to a time, the time the book was written in. It would mean the truth was tied to a place, the place the truth was written in. It would mean the truth is tied to writing and recording and reading and remembering. It would mean the truth was tied to interpreters and reciters.

How can the truth be in a place? It would mean the truth can be divided and measured and located. Power can be in a place but not truth.

How can truth be in any construct, any thought or word or place or thing? The truth is uncreated, boundless and timeless. Approximations and indications must not be confused with reality itself. At the end of an infinite string of "Not this" and "Not that" lies truth: there, before a single word is spoken, before a single thought or movement or feeling or image or sound - beyond, beyond, beyond beyond.

Pretending a World by Louis Evan Palmer

In the future if it's "good", we may have all our basic, and even secondary, needs provided for. We may be able to do whatever we legally want. Legal may be expanded over what it is today.

It could easily be a world where all people are doing something related to a portrayal or an artistic creation: that is, you are either watching a production or event of some kind - sports, entertainment, education; or, performing in an event or production; or you're communicating about a production or event.

It would highlight "real" versus "contrived" but it might, in fact, highlight that the real life we're leading is more fiction (i.e. made up) than fact. Or, that there is no essential difference between acting something or supposedly "being" something if real life is actually a script like any other. It may be a script that's embedded and somewhat unconscious but nonetheless, it's created in an interaction between people and individuals and the surrounding world; it's a series of choices and accompanying actions.

If we strip away the layers and veneers, the only actions we take that are not in any way contrived are those related to food, shelter and clothing. Yet, even those have accreted their share of rituals and acting out. But, those ancilliary actions and words can only exist when the primal search for food, water, shelter and clothing is satisifed for today and several weeks into the future. "Roles" to do with those existential needs are the foundation for all that follows. Related to these fundamental needs is the need for safety and security of person and property - if you can't protect what's yours, you'll starve or freeze or die of thirst or die out. And, of course, the drive that nature imparts for procreation.

Is pretending (e.g. acting) intrinsically frivolous or wasteful or unproductive? Is it a bad use of time and energy? It is if it doesn't increase our knowledge of ourself, our society or existence in general. This leads us to who is doing the acting and who is doing the watching where acting's main purpose is to tell a story. What if the so-called "story" is incidental and the "being" of everything is the message? And, any story has that in it, as does ordinary living, if we could only see it or feel it.

So, acting and pretending and generally being unproductive is like everything else - it depends on who's doing it, who's witnessing it, what's needs to be done and if it's done, the society, the economy, the beliefs and probably, most of all, the attention and concentration that devoted to observing and understanding whatever we see and feel at all times whether it's supposedly "unreal" or, even more, if it's supposedly "real".

The Tenuousness of History by Louis Evan Palmer

Probably the most famous saying to do with the unreliability of historical accounts is "History is written by the victors" attributed to Winston Churchill who as the author of six volumes on World War II would have had extensive first-hand experience of the accuracy of that observation.

When we see how important a role propaganda plays in any conflict and the fact that most history revolves around conflict, we can see that many of the strands in any given historical story are comprised of deliberate, and often insidiously inserted, "facts" that further a given purpose although sometimes the "facts" are blatant and crude. The mix of crude and sly are construed for maximum effect.

The curtains of secrets that descend in any conflict is another way that the historical truth of anything becomes tainted and and its deciphering gets deferred to an indeterminate future. Secrets large and small, trivial and monumental, diminish and twist the historical record for the duration of the "hold" periods; or sometimes forever, if the secret is still in force or deep and dark enough.

Interpretations of the facts according to an ideological prism also impacts the way things are framed and explained.

The exercise of caution in accepting "facts", the inclusion of other sources and a healthy skepticism, may help to winnow the story down to something that is passably "true" although it seems that we will fall short in the numerous details and in the over-arching reasons. Historical stories, true or false, continue on their own because they serve a purpose today and into the future. The best "histories" work as a kind of perpetual motion machine that once started never stop. And there is one of the dangers because these flying historical daggers almost always have a malicious intent.

The Era of the Three Thousand Countries by Louis Evan Palmer

In the future, probably distant, something has occurred, likely violent, that has caused countries to split apart into much smaller entities akin to provinces or counties. If it proceeds in a good way, there will be rules and laws that mandate the maximum parameters of a country - geographic extent, population, wealth. It would look something like 2 or 3 hundred countries replacing the former USA, possibly, a hundred in the former Canada and another hundred replacing the former Mexico. And, this would be global. The former Russia is now perhaps 4 hundred countries and China and India perhaps 2 hundred countries each. And so on throughout the globe. No hegemony. No massive armies. No stratospheric military budgets. Lots of standardization and harmonization regarding things that are in common but also lots of differences and nuances. This is the opposite of empire-building or imperialism. It is a peaceful individualization, a beneficial shrinking, an anti-inflammatory, a way towards perpetual peace, prosperity and diversity.

The 7 Days of Valentine's by Louis Evan Palmer

One day is not enough and is fraught with going from ordinary to extraordinary in a relative flash. Everyone knows that a build-up and a denouement are natural and expected. It could be three days but again, it hardly seems enough. The twelve days of Christmas seems like too many, and, it's already being done. We want a length that not been done, that's not too long, and not too short, and, ideally, that has some cachet. One of the magical numbers - which lands us at seven. The twist I would propose is not to have all the days precede the event itself but to have Valentine's day as the apex with a natural and enjoyable build-up and a denouement. Three days before, Valentine's Day itself, and three days after.

Three roses, two chocolates, one poem. Something mysterious and thoughtful for Valentine's Day. And then, one bottle of perfume, two candies, and three bars of fancy soap. The seven days of Valentine's. Any and all variations for the presents or love votive.

Let's try it next year and sees if it's a better fit for the Day of Love than just the one day.

Transactional Being by Louis Evan Palmer

The Buddhist masters say that there is a chain of interdependence and no one solid being, only the illusion of one. That the person we think we are is what we see and recall of sets or series of transactions that occur between other dependent processes. An illusory being that seems enduring and distinct but, in fact, springs into and out of existence with each transaction that occurs - a thought,a word, a movement; each a little stitch but not in a single garment of our self; rather, in the fabric of it all. The consciousness like a flashlight in a dark room, illuminating the small spot of the moment then a necklace of moments.

If a computer program or robot did all those things we wouldn't think it was a bona fide person. But we do for ourselves. We think that partly because we have a body, and thus, we seem to have a "being". Yet science keeps discovering more about our bodies and minds and what it indicates is more complexity and other things besides "ourselves" proper. Like non-human bacteria and viruses in our bodies; that our brain is seemingly not needed as seen in functioning persons with little or no brain; that we can induce thoughts and feelings through electromagnetic waves or fields.

Are you your voice? Your listening? Are you your thoughts? Who would know? Memories? Are you whatever scribblings you might make? Words? Pictures? Musical notes? Is it merely a reaction? All your actions a reaction to something or things? Reactions to reactions to other reactions throughout the present and past? Interactions of one thing with another; there, not there; active, not-active. States and interactions. No real being. Actions and transactions, on and off; strung together by memory; itself another transaction. Nothing. No-one.

If the Universe was a Sudoku puzzle by Louis Evan Palmer

The object of Sudoku is to discover the numbers from 1 to 9 that align along each row, column and 3x3 box such that no number is repeated in any of the 3 constructs (row, column, 3x3 box). What if instead we had looked at a completed Suduko and realised that the above was true. We uncover an order in what appears to be a jumble of numbers. Bliss equals hidden order manifested.

What if our universe or multi-verse is created in such a way that it is in fact an unimaginably immense sudoku where "something" always adds up the same way no matter how you add it. You add up your lives across time and space. You add up all the connected lives you interact with in this life. You "add" up the entire planet. You add up our Solar System, our galaxy, other galaxies. Always the same total. What is it that adds up the same across all significant parameters?

It is not something mutable. It is not something bound in time. It is not some "thing" at all. That's why it's all alright. Always. Everywhere. And it doesn't matter what you say or do. Evil doesn't matter or Good. The whole is reflected in the part and the part reflects the whole. Fractals meet Sudoku. The boundless sea of potential meets the great manifestation machine. It's over before it began. It never began. It never ended.

Year Zero - Starting Over - The Way out of Economic Collapse by Louis Evan Palmer

This may seem naive or ignorant but it seems to be clear that an almost complete government intervention would be needed if a full-scale economic collapse occurs. Do governments have plans in place? And not just plans to control, incarcerate and pacify the general population. Plans to help people and right the economy.

Plans that control all financial and related transactions and seal all borders - physical and electronic. Plans that freeze all current financial obligations and do not permit closures, seizures or foreclosures by anyone except the federal government.

The next step is to issue a new currency. All assets will have to converted into the new currency, They would be tabulated and scrutinized as to propriety and legality. The new currency would be based on the size of the economy, number of consumers, and other relevant factors.

All financial institutions would come under supervision and, potentially, governement control to ensure that accounts are kept open and that credit is available. The government would also break up private and corporate holdings that constitute an undue concentration of power.

A quick, easy and effective means of representation is needed and can take its cue from ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy: that is, selection via lottery, one or two year terms. Leaders can be elected by the parliament by consensus as they do in the North West Territories. The current representatives are not part of the solution.

We need a plan and we need to see it and debate it.

Super Rich have excessive power by Louis Evan Palmer

On December 5th, 2012, the Globe and Mail ran a story called "Seven Millionaire Myths" by Claire Bradley of Investopedia.com

It is basically an apology for millionaires and seeks to cast them as ordinary and like us in that they pay taxes and work for their money. But millionaires are really a red herring in this case as a million in assets is not that much. The real message of this Globe and Mail propaganda piece is to agglomerate the super rich in with the ordinary millionaires so as to be able to include them in the statements that the "rich" are being unfairly characterized in the media and we should accept the assertions in this article and applaud them and their economic contributions. Among other things, this is a roundabout way of denigrating the Occupy movement and other similar organizations or persons who call out the massive economic distortions and targeted sweet-heart policies. However, the real issue is the definition of "rich" and the undue and unreported influence of a very small "super rich" group on all levels of government, the economy and society.

Referring to a University of California study at the following website http://www2.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html which reflects American statistics for the year 2005, there is a surprising and remarkable differentiation of wealth even in the top 1%. At the very top, a mere 400 households "earn" almost $90 million dollars income per year each mostly via financial manipulations and transactions. The continuing trend of consolidation and enrichment means it's only worse now, six years down the road, especially with unnecessary and barely legal bailouts for the chief transgressors in the recent financial debacles.

The same dangerous accumulation of wealth and power is undoubtedly happening in Europe and Asia. And then, there's other incomes that can be used to amass power and influence and manipulate events - undeclared income and assets, illegal income and assets and appropriated or seized income and assets. Again, focusing on the top of the top (i.e. the top 1/5000th of 1%), there's ample scope and an expectation for massive undue power and influence including corruption in undeveloped or developing countries and globally in government or corporate sectors where key power levers are exercised. There are also rogue government agencies, especially intelligence groups, that are creating and increasing their funding and power - and they have the added benefit of sophisticated armaments and personnel - in some ways, operating in a manner similar to organized crime. There are several groups wielding undue power but the key group in the advanced nations (and thus the world) is the super rich especially when we factor in the numerous corporations they control and which provide an enormous multiplier effect on their reach and capability. The issue becomes the excessive, often unmerited, accumulation of wealth and power by the super rich and its guaranteed abuse over time which always includes a debasement and impoverishment of the 99.9%

As an aside, there is no bio of Claire Bradley at Investopedia which appears to be her main (only?) publishing venue. As of August 2010, Forbes sold Investopedia to ValueClick. Investopedia is based in Edmonton, Alberta.
